Well done to all the boys and girls who received their MS Readathon thank you gifts today.

The boys and girls in Fifth Class who took part in the Readathon will receive their prizes on Monday.

This week we have been learning all about where our food comes from. We were surprised to see how many things use milk; yoghurt, ice-cream, chocolate, cheese, butter and even some breads and cakes! We learned about how we get milk from some herds and beef from others. As well as getting milk from cows we can get milk from sheep and goats which can be used to make cheese too. We also learned about growing cereals like wheat, oats and barley. Can you think of anything you like to eat that comes from a farm?

The best part of learning about the food we grow in Ireland was the tasting! The children brought in examples of food we can grow here, such as carrots, potatoes, apples, parsnips as well as some herbs. We tasted chives and were surprised that we could eat the flower as well as the leaf. We know we can only eat certain flowers so we need to check first! We also tried some mint and Irish strawberries. We crunched through some lovely Irish carrots as well – Healthy snacks that are all grown in Ireland; yummy!

Today we had a very busy, but fun pyjama day! There were loads of people wearing pyjamas. All in different colours and designs. Some people were so brilliant that they brought in more than enough money to raise for the 4 kids 2 live charity in Kenya. We raised an amazing amount of money in total: 775.44 euro!!!! So thanks to all the people who helped out today, we made the lives of orphans in Kenya a lot better!

This week we’ve been looking at where we live and where our families are from. We had great fun finding out where Ireland is using our map of the world. We then talked about where we were born and where our families were from and where they live.

Collins or DeValera

This week in 4th class we had a serious and heated debate about the future of our country. Half of our class took on the role of Michael Collins and the pro-treaty side. The other half of the class took on the role of Eamon DeValera and the anti-treaty side.

Once the facts had been dicussed in class….both sides were given time to prepare their arguements for their proposal. Then came the actual debate. We all dressed up in our best 1920s clothing making use of Dad’s jacket, Mam’s coat, etc. Some of us even had tweed hats. When the debate started, it was quite obvious that it was going to be a close one. Both sides made some fantastic arguements and in the end we had to bring in some 6th class to adjudicate the debate and produce a result.

In the end the Collins pro-treaty side won the debate but this was not due to lack of effort by DeValera and the anti-treaty group. Interesting how history often repeats itself!!!

Fishy News

In Art over the last two weeks we have been working with clay. We made clay fish with tails, fins, eyes and a big open mouth. When the clay dried we painted our fish using four bright colours and our own designs. In Science we talked about ways we can recycle and the different types of material that is recyclable. In maths we had great fun learning about money and using coins all the way up to 20c.
