This week in Michael’s class, we watched the season change from Winter into Spring. It happened almost overnight! But even though it was still very cold, we discovered that the first snowdrops have arrived and some of us have already seen the first new lambs. We have each started our very own Spring book and we are writing a little into it every day. When our books are finished, we will bring them home.

In Maths we have been making pictograms about our favourite things; pets, fruits and colours. These pictures help us to understand the way that numbers work in everyday life!

We made animals with spotty patterns using paint and bubblewrap today! It was fun and we were able to pop the bubbles when we were finished. We talked about the food pyramid and healthy eating this week and we learned a lot of new words about Bia (Food) as Gaeilge. We also learned a new poem about food called Ag Ithe agus ag Ól:

Ólaim bainne, ólaim tae,

ólaim cócó, i lár an lae!

Ithim prataí, ithim ubh,

Ithim arán, le him agus subh!

This week we were very excited about the beginning of a new season. We have said goodbye to Winter and have given a big hello to Spring! On Wednesday, we learned about the story of St. Brigid and the Curragh and the boys and girls worked so well together in groups drawing and writing the story in sequence to display on our wall.

In Science we cut open some bulbs to see what the inside looks like! We know that the bulb stores all of the food for the plant to grow so we need to be very careful when handling them.

Today we read a story by Hans Christian Anderson called The Snowdrop. We heard about how delicate these flowers are and how, with a little bit of sunshine, the brave snowdrop pushes and stretches through the earth to say hello to Spring. We then looked at lots of snowdrops and saw how the flowers are white with tiny green stripes on the inside. With a snowdrop in front of us and using coloured card, we drew the stem and leaves green and then used chalk to draw the white flower. We were delighted to see so many beautiful works of art drawn with such care and attention.

Well done everyone; we can really enjoy the beginning of Spring in our classroom by looking at all of these beautiful snowdrops.

Have a great weekend,

Slán.

We watched a DVD about the people who explore there and we saw all of the creatures that live under the sea. We really loved looking at the active volcano that explodes there all the time!

In History we found out about the very brave Irish explorer Tom Crean. We read his story and created a timeline in our class room to illustrate his life.

For centuries, drawings and paintings were simply an attempt to accurately capture and record a scene. They were thought of in much the same way we think about photographs today. In the second half of the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed society and this was reflected in dramatic changes that visual arts went through. New art styles and movements appeared and disappeared quickly- this was a reflection of the rapid changes in society. Art in this period is known as Modern Art. The Sixth class project group have been busy researching some of the major Art movements from this time (Impressionism, Fauvism, Art Nouveau & Deco, Surrealism and Pop Art) and will present their projects to their class in the coming weeks.

Hi everyone!!

What a busy week we’ve had!! Check out some of the great things we got up to this week!!

In Gaeilge this week we have been learning about the weather and sneachta (snow)!! We learned lots of new words such as “fear sneachta”, “liathróidí sneachta”, “an ghrian”, “uachtar reoite”, fear an phoist”, “lámhainní, “scairf”, “hata”, “Robín”, and “ag scátáil”!!! We also played a listening game on the whiteboard to practise our words. It was so much fun!

In Phonics, there are exciting times ahead! We have finished Set 4 now and on Monday we will be starting our brand new Set 5!! We can’t wait to learn lots more new sounds so that we can read lots more new words!!

In Maths we are working hard on number 3 and we love our rhyme to help us remember how to write it!

“A curl for you and a curl for me, that’s how you write the number 3″

In History this week we looked at a Traditional Irish Legend about St. Brigid. Some people celebrate St. Brigid’s Day on February 1st which as we know is also the 1st day of spring! We read an interesting story about St. Brigid’s Cloak. Here is a link for you to read it too!

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/aai-files/assets/ebooks/talking%20ebooks/stories/brigids%20cloak/St-Brigid-easy(2).swf

Finally, in Art today we worked on our Easter Egg designs. We had a visitor from Bank of Ireland a few weeks ago and she told us how her office looked so bare. She asked us to design Easter Egg pictures that she could hang in her office. They look great and we are sure she will love them when she comes to collect them!

Have a great weekend everyone

We have been doing some wonderful fun activities in Siobhán’s room this week.

Students from both Junior Infant classes learned the poem ‘Roly Poly.’ Today, after lots of preparing we went to the recording studio to record the rhyme! You can listen to them below!

Rowan, Tom, Emhin and Cillian were first to try it out. On the second recording you can hear Eleanor, Taylor, Daniel and Alexandar. It was great fun. We hope to visit and do more recording soon!

Also this week groups of Junior Infants have been doing some extra work with their handwriting. We’ve been practicing some tricky letters and learning little rhymes to help us remember how to write them.

These are the letters we’ve revised over the past two weeks:

c – Start at the top, come round, and stop!

a – Start as if it was c for cat, come back up like an acrobat, down to the ground, and flick.

o – Start as if it was c for cat, but make an orange, just like that!

d – Start as if it was c for cat, come back round like an acrobat, now climb up the dinosaur neck, slide back down to his foot and flick.

Check out our display showing the fantastic work by Iman, Robert, Ella, Leah, Liam and Joy.

Finally, a little while ago James from Senior Infants told us about his trip to the zoo. He wrote all about it and this week he typed his news on the computer. It was his first time typing on the computer in school and he did such a wonderful job:

My News

I went to the petting zoo with Lisa and Granny.

I saw a California sea lion.

It was big and grey.

By James

Super stuff, well done everyone!
